Cultural tour of Morocco

Book as a party of 4 and each person gets a discount of US$ 250/CA$ 345 per person.

The cultural diversity of the nation of Morocco is a thing of awe and wonder. Its pisé mud-brick Berber architecture, Spanish Andalusian-influenced melhoune music, and delicious spices of ras el hanout are just a few of the North African country's signature charms. Morocco is home to the world's largest desert known as the Sahara Desert! In Africa, Morocco is the 25th largest country with a population of almost 34 million. Since its foundation in 788 AD by Idris I, the country has been under the rule of a series of independent dynasties. Morocco is a melting pot of different cultural backgrounds, languages, food tastes, ethnicity and a lot more.  The largest ethnic and cultural background is that of the Arab-Berber descent. Many of the modern Berber tribes reside deep in the mountain and desert regions that make up the outskirts of Morocco. This journey will give us a glimpse of the mosaic of Morocco visiting historical, cultural, scenic places, meeting local folks, enjoying the food, desert life and a lot more.

The Hassan II Mosque largest mosque in Casablanca, Morocco

After breakfast, we start exploring Morocco’s largest city and economic capital, Casablanca. We explore this famous city visiting the enormous 1933 built Hassan II Mosque, which has a 210m minaret topped with lasers directed towards Mecca. Passing by the old Medina we head to Rick's Café, a legendary place thanks to two cinematic icons, Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart who in 1942 acted on their famous movie named after the city, Casablanca.  Visit the Notre Dame de Lourdes and the Habbous Square and the Royal Palace of Casablanca in the city's old quarter, built during the French colonial period.  Continue to the Ain Diab Corniche for a pleasant stroll along the coast. A scenic 120Kms along the coast to Morocco’s capital city of Rabat. You have the option to try experiencing a traditional accommodation called Riad. Riad (riyad) is a traditional Moroccan and Andalusian interior garden or courtyard associated with a family home and has a palace like architecture. Its origin is generally attributed to the Persian gardens that spread here during the Islamic/Moorish period.

Overnight: Le Diwan/Riad Zyo, Rabat (1 night) (B)

Day 03: Rabat/Chefchaouen (Drive 190 kms)

The city of blue! Chefchaouen, Morocco

After breakfast, take a short walk to the Mohammed V Mausoleum, known for its stunning mosaics, marble floor, and gold leaf ceiling. Nearby, you'll find the historic Hassan Tower, built in 1195. Explore the Kasbah of the Udayas, a medieval citadel perched on a mountain overlooking the ocean, dating back to the Almohad era. Inside the Kasbah, discover beautiful Andalusian gardens with fountains, orange trees, flowers, and palms.

Continue your journey to Chefchaouen, a charming city famous for its blue and white houses. Explore the cobblestone medina, sit at a café in the Outa-el-Hammam square, and admire the Tarik-Ben-Ziad Mosque with its octagonal minaret reminiscent of the Torre de Oro in Seville. The Kasbah, located in the center of the medina, showcases Andalusian architecture and a small museum with embroidered clothing and djellabas, traditional North African garments.

Day 04: Chefchaouen/Fez via Volubilis and Meknes (Drive 125 Kms)

Meknes, Morocco

A countryside drive gets us to Ouazzane, home of many pillars of Sufism and holy city for Moroccan Jews. It is still a popular pilgrimage venue to venerate the tomb of several marabouts (Moroccan saints), particularly Moul Anrhaz, the local name for Rabbi Amram ben Diwan, an 18th-century rabbi who lived in the city and whose burial site is associated with several miracles. We drive to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis to explore its stunning ruins. Impressive stone arches and columns, some tumbled down and others still standing tall against the vivid blue sky, invite us to take a step back in time. Only about half of the 40-hectare UNESCO site of Volubilis has been excavated. The Capitol, dedicated to the Triad of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva, dates 218AD; the Basilica and 1,300 sq. meters Forum are nearby. Here, floors of what were once family dwellings are still covered with decorative tile mosaics depicting mythological beings, such as Orpheus charming animals with their lyre and Hercules performing his legendary 12 labors. Then we are off to the imperial city of Meknes, the one-time home of the Moroccan sultanate with its Medina all-winding narrow streets and grand buildings that justify its stamp of Imperial City. Remnants of three sets of fortifications, ingeniously incorporated into the city roads network, emphasize its past importance and glory.  The king's tomb sits at the heart of what remains of the original imperial city, flanked by an almighty royal granary, the magnificent Bab el-Mansour. We then continue to Fez, Morocco’s most well-known imperial capitals.

Overnight: Hotel L’Escle/Riad Salam, Fez (2 nights) (B)

Day 05: Fez

Leather dying in a traditional tannery in the city Fez, Morocco

Transport yourself to the enchanting Middle Ages visiting one of the world's most timeless and remarkably preserved cities, Fez El Bali, also known as Old Fez. This city stands as the cultural heart of Morocco, offering a captivating journey through history. Stroll through the labyrinthine network of 9,000 narrow lanes and alleys that compose the souks, or open-air markets, within the city's ancient quarter, originally established in the 8th century. Fez, once an Imperial capital, was renowned as a medieval center of learning. At its core lies the Karaouine, one of the world's oldest functioning universities, a testament to its historical significance.

Nearby, you'll encounter the Attarine Medersa, a masterpiece of Hispano-Moorish architecture constructed in the 14th century. Continue our exploration of the Nejjarine Square, graced by a beautiful fountain adorned with intricate tilework. Here, you'll find the Fondouq, a Caravanserai that has been transformed into a Carpentry Museum, offering insights into the city's craftsmanship heritage.

In the 13th century, the Merinide Dynasty gave rise to Fez El Jdid, or New Fez, characterized by its Royal Palace, mosques, madrasas, souks, and city walls. Particularly noteworthy is the Mellah, the Jewish quarter, which provides a fascinating glimpse into Jewish architectural traditions. Marvel at the wrought-iron adorned windows and exquisitely carved wood balconies of the historic mansions in this quarter.
